"It is not true, as is sometimes said, that man cannot organize the world without God.
What is true is that, without God, he can ultimately only organize it against man.
Exclusive humanism is inhuman humanism."
-- Henri de Lubac, The Drama of Atheist Humanism (1944)

Technology's Deeper Resonances
The newest issue of The New Atlantis (Summer 2005; available on-line at http://thenewatlantis.com/) provides further evidence that it is the most instructive and insightful publication examining the many facets of the relationship between technology and culture. Christine Rosen (a guest on MARS HILL AUDIO Journal volume 70) continues her series of reflections on how some of the most private and personal technologies (iPods, TiVo, cosmetic surgery) shape our consciousness and our sense of personal identity and of the shape and texture of relationships. The Necessity of Tradition
In 1997, I wrote a short article for Modern Reformation magazine entitled "Is Popular Culture Either?" It was an epilogue to my 1989 book, All God's Children and Blue Suede Shoes: Christians and Popular Culture, which began my interest in what might be called the sociology of popular culture. While many Christian apologists have focused on the message-bearing capacity of pop cultural artifacts, I have long been more interested in the deeper dynamic of how cultural forms situate us in (or out of) communities, how they shape our deepest assumptions (as opposed to our explicit beliefs), and how they shape sensibilities and emotional expectations which, in turn, become matrices of meaning. Splintered Light Bookstore Under New Ownership
Splintered Light Bookstore, the
Charlottesville-based bookstore that has been mentioned in the listener's guide
of the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal since volume 11, changed ownership
at the beginning of August. The new owners, Byron and Rie
(short for Marie) Harris, learned about the store shortly after Russell Hof founded it in 1996. Keen on its focus on theology and
cultural criticism, the Harrises tracked from
Now in possession of the store, the Harrises said they will continue stocking books within the "ecumenically orthodox Christian" tradition of the store. Their immediate focus is on learning Splintered Light's business and maintaining its established customer base; eventually, though, they would like to expand the store's business, increasing the selection of books on the arts, poetry, social justice, and biblical commentary. They will also develop the bookstore's web page so people will be able to shop and order on-line, and advertise in local and national publications.
Their long-term vision for the store includes developing it as a cultural center that fosters discussions about incorporating faith and work, encouraging Christians in their pursuit of cultural engagement. This may include, they said, opening -- in conjunction with the Center for Christian Study -- a coffeehouse in the Center; inviting local artists to speak about and display their work; starting a publishing house with the Splintered Light moniker; and hosting discussion groups for Christians in the community.
The Harrises, who said they are privileged to be a part of the bookstore's ministry, welcome the support of those dedicated to the store and its mission, which they stated as "In pursuit of truth and beauty, specializing in theology, philosophy, and the arts." They also said they plan to continue to stock the books mentioned on the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal.
