January 15, 2005 v Number 11

"The great line of demarcation in modern politics, Eric Voegelin used to point out, is not
a division between liberals on one side and totalitarians on the other. No, on one side of
that line are all those men and women who fancy that the temporal order is the only
order, and that material needs are their only needs, and that they may do as they like
with the human patrimony. On the other side of that line are all those people who
recognize an enduring moral order in the universe, a constant human nature, and high
duties toward the order spiritual and the order temporal."

The European Union and Virtual Harems

On Volume 71 of the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal, professor Steven Rhoads discusses the biological evidence for taking sex differences seriously. His book on the subject demonstrates that Rhoads is well-versed in the detrimental effects, for families and individuals, of not taking sex differences seriously; he encourages policy makers and employers to pay such differences greater heed in public policy and the work place. Rhoads extends similar arguments about taking public prohibitions against adultery seriously in a recent article for The Weekly Standard. [Read more]

British Journal: Home-educated Children Show High Levels of Ability and Good Social Skills

On Volume 54 of the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal, Mitchell L. Stevens discussed his book about home-schooling and motivations to home-school. Now a study published in the Journal of Early Childhood Research compares the intellectual development of children who have been home-educated with that of those who have been school-educated. Tech Tonic: Towards a New Technology of Literacy

This is from Issue # 157 of NetFuture by Stephen L. Talbott:

"Every so often one finds a public document so balanced and lucid, so filled with uncommon good sense, so genially expressed, that it flashes across the rhetorical firmament like a meteor.  We saw such an unexpected document in Beyond Therapy, the report of the President's Commission on Biotechnology. Now we have another example in Tech Tonic: Towards a New Literacy of Technology.

"This report was prepared by the Alliance for Childhood.  I probably ought to list here the report's 'ten principles for a new literacy of technology', along with its seven recommended 'key reforms.' But the richness of the authors' treatment, the helpful background discussion, the inspiring examples, and the detailed references discourage me from any attempt at a brief summary.  Instead, I will do no more than list the chapter headings:

Overview: Preparing Children for a New Century

Reclaiming Technology: Why We need a New Definition of Technology Literacy

What's Wrong with a High-Tech Childhood?

A Critique of Current Technology Education Standards

Ten Principles for a New Literacy of Technology

The Ten Principles in Action

Developmental Guidelines for Technology Literacy

Technology Education for Democracy: Guidelines for Citizen Action

Technology Literacy Guidelines for Teachers and Teacher Education

Questions and Answers about Children and Technology

Resources for Technology Awareness

"The full text of Tech Tonic is available on the Alliance's website, http://www.allianceforchildhood.net.  You will find other valuable material on the site as well, including assessments of the importance of play for children, commentary on the push for high-stakes testing, and the earlier report on technology literacy, entitled Fool's Gold.

L'Abri Fellowship Jubilee Conference

The influence of Francis Schaeffer has been extensive, as he challenged a generation to live out the Christian faith in ways more intellectually rigorous, culturally engaged, and aesthetically rich than was the norm in many Christian subcultures, much less in a modern, secular culture increasingly hostile to religious claims based on revelation. To mark fifty years of the Swiss L'Abri community founded by Schaeffer and his wife Edith, a jubilee conference is being held March 11-13, 2005 in St. Louis. Speakers will include Chuck Colson, Os Guinness, and Harold O. J. Brown. For more information see www.labri.org/conferences.
