"What would it mean if, instead of trying to explain the gospel in terms of our modern scientific
culture, we tried to explain our culture in terms of the gospel?"

The Witness of Czeslaw Milosz

In his interview with Roger Lundin about poet Czeslaw Milosz (1911-2004) on Volume 71 of the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal, Ken Myers mentioned an article about Milosz published in the November 2004 issue of First Things. The full text of the article is now available through First Things's web pages. In "The Witness of Czeslaw Milosz," author Jeremy Driscoll attends to an oft-overlooked element of Milosz's greatness: his Christian witness. [Read more]

George Marsden Receives Grawemeyer Award for Religion

Raise three cheers for University of Notre Dame professor George Marsden who has received the 2005 Grawemeyer Award for religion. The award honors Marsden for his recently published and much-heralded biography of Jonathan Edwards. Marsden discusses Jonathan Edwards: A Life on Volume 65 of the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal. Bringing the Blush to Old Slewfoot's Face

William B. Eerdmans Publishing Company has collected a number of professor Alan Jacobs's works in Shaming the Devil. The subtitle of the book, Essays in Truthtelling, aptly and succinctly expresses the task of the collection, which Jacobs (a guest on several volumes of the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal) describes as conducting experiments in truthtelling and the pursuit of truth. The Temptation to World-lessness

"One way that Christians have escaped the ramified demands of discipleship, especially in the shape of our cultural lives, is to assume that the sphere of Creation and the sphere of Redemption are intrinsically separate. So our salvation is understood as a 'spiritual' matter, an inner transformation, while our social and cultural lives can continue to be lived in accordance with the allegedly neutral, value-free, mechanical principles established by economists, sociologists, and other scientific experts. We thereby assume that we can escape worldliness by ignoring hard questions about economics, art, politics, and technology by concentrating on inward concerns." You may read more of Ken Myers's Fall fundraising letter online. We ask you to consider making a year-end contribution to Mars Hill Audio, which may, if you prefer, be accomplished using our online contribution form, or by printing and mailing this form. Thank you for your consideration.

R. R. Reno Excerpts Expiring Soon

A while ago we posted to our webpages two chapters from a book by R. R. Reno called In the Ruins of the Church: Sustaining Faith in an Age of Diminished Christianity. The book's publisher, Brazos Press, graciously allowed us to excerpt Sex in the Episcopal Church (on ecclesiastical politics and the homosexual agenda in the Episcopal Church) and Postmodern Irony and Petronian Humanism (on the particular moral and religious challenges to evangelism presented by modern American culture). However, our agreement with Brazos expires on December 16, so if you'd like to read or download these essays you should do so as soon as possible.

Online Orders Using Your Mac

A number of you have reported problems encountered while trying to place an online orders; usually an error message pops up somewhere along the way, or the final order appears to be blank. From what we can tell, most of these problems occur when using Macintosh computers, and we're trying to figure out which operating systems and/or browsers seem to be causing trouble. If you have a Mac with OS 10 or higher you should have no trouble, no matter which browser you use. But if you are using system 9 or lower you may encounter difficulties. If you do, please give us a call; this information will help us, and we'll be able to complete your order over the telephone. Thanks for your patience; we hope to get to the bottom of this soon.
