Frequently Asked Questions

About MARS HILL AUDIO:
Frequently Asked Questions - General

Q. What is Mars Hill Audio?
A. Mars Hill Audio is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization that produces audio resources intended to help Christians to think more critically about contemporary (modern) culture and live more wisely and faithfully in it. Find out more about our non-profit status or make a tax-deductible contribution.
Q. What does Mars Hill Audio do?
A. We produce programs that we distribute on audio-cassette or compact disc. The main production is the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal, a 90-minute, bi-monthly “audio magazine” that we sell by subscription. Each 90-minute issue features 5 to 8 interviews dealing with a wide range of subjects, such as history, the visual arts, music, economics, literature, science, technology, and politics. (See “Editorial Policy” for further details.). We also produce:
  • MHA Conversations, a series of extended single-topic conversations with one or two people
  • MHA Anthologies, each of which consists of a selection of print articles (from magazines, journals, or books) on a single topic, read onto tape
  • MHA Reports, a series of extensive, in-depth “audio documentaries” dealing with a single topic
  • MHA Books on tape, on topics that are of particular interest to us, such as Gilbert Meilaender’s BioEthics: A Primer for Christians.
Q. How many subscribers do you have?
A. For the past couple of years our subscriber base has ranged between 8,500 to 10,000 people. With pass-along listening and library subscriptions, we estimate we have anywhere from 20,000 to 30,000 listeners.
Q. How do you decide what goes on the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal?
A. These decisions are made by the host and producer, Ken Myers. You may read our editorial guidelines if you like.
Q. How long have you been in business?
A. We’ve been producing the MHA Journal since 1993, though the organization has been around since 1989. From 1989 to 1993 Ken Myers produced a couple of newsletters, Genesis and Public Eye. For more details, see a brief organizational history.
Q. What is your denominational affiliation?
A. We are not formally associated with any denomination; but our doctrinal statement is in the Reformed (or Calvinist) tradition, and the majority of our staff and board of directors belong to churches that are in the Presbyterian or Episcopal/Anglican traditions.
Q. Are you associated with any other organization, such as the Mars Hill Forum (publisher of the Mars Hill Review)?
A. No, we are independent.
Q. How many people work for MHA?
A. Currently we have 3 full-time employees and 2 part-time employees. Ken Myers and one other person do the editorial and production work, and the rest work in the business department. See our staff listing for further details.
Q. Who sits on the Board of Directors for MHA?
A. The listing of the Board of Directors of MARS HILL AUDIO is available here.
Q. Do you sell the books mentioned on the MARS HILL AUDIO Journal?
A. No, but any book marked with an asterisk in the listener guide can be obtained from our friends at Splintered Light Bookstore in Charlottesville, VA. Contact them by calling 800-979-3310 or see their website. You may send e-mail to goodreads[at]splinteredlightbooks.com.
